Jamshedpur, May 22: The Department of Civil Engineering at NIT Jamshedpur successfully hosted the National Workshop on “Limit State Design of Steel Structures (LSDSS-2024)” from May 17 to 21, 2024. Conducted in hybrid mode, this workshop was sponsored by the Jharkhand Council of Science & Technology and Innovation (JCSTI), Government of Jharkhand.
The event saw significant participation and was graced by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Principal of the Government’s Women Polytechnic College, Jamshedpur, as the Chief Guest. Prof. (Dr.) R.V Sharma, Deputy Director of NIT Jamshedpur, served as the Patron, with Dr. Sanjay Kumar, HOD of Civil Engineering, acting as Chairman. The coordinators for the workshop were Prof. Virendra Kumar, Dr. K K Sharma, and Dr. S. Madhuri from the Department of Civil Engineering. Dr. A K Choudhary from the same department served as the Convener.
The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ understanding and skills in the field of steel structure design, focusing on the Limit State Design Method as per IS 800-2007. Key topics covered included the design philosophy of limit state design, conceptual design for steel structures, load and load combinations, and the behavior of different structural members. Special sessions were dedicated to the design and detailing of tubular members and connections, welded and bolted connections, and the design of steel structures under extreme loadings, including fire-resistant and seismic designs.
Internationally renowned expert, Prof. Venkatesh K. R. Kodur from Michigan State University, USA, delivered a keynote session on “Design Methodologies for Enhancing Fire Resistance of Steel Structures through Composite Construction.” Other notable speakers included Prof. L.M. Gupta from VNIT Nagpur, Prof. S. S. Mishra from NIT Patna, Prof. Somnath Gosh from Haldia Institute of Technology, Dr. Vineet Sahoo from NIT Jamshedpur, Prof. S. B. Singh from BITS Pilani, Dr. Vishwajit Anand from IIT (BHU), Er. Nelluru Subba Reddy from Dragados Offshore S.A.U, Dr. Romanbabu Oinam from IIT Guwahati, Er. Arijit Guha from INSDAG, and Prof. S R Satish Kumar.
