A national organization dedicated to bridge building is hosting a workshop in Barron next week.

The Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance and officials from Barron County will host a complimentary short span steel bridge workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop will highlight a bridge constructed in the Town of Barron by the Barron County Highway Department.

“The highlight of the bridge tour will be the 15th Avenue Bridge in Barron, which is the first steel press-brake-formed tub girder bridge to be installed in Wisconsin,” said Dan Snyder, vice president, construction program for the American Iron and Steel Institute and director of the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance.

The workshop will be held at the Barron County Highway Facility on 260 N. Seventh St. in Barron.

Recently retired Barron County highway commissioner Mark Servi, who has extensive experience with short span steel bridges, will be among the presenters.

Snyder said, “This workshop and tour will equip participants with information they need to replace aging structures with cost-effective, time-saving steel options for state and county bridges.”

The topics for the workshop include:

• Short Span Steel Bridge Overview, Design Tools, Bridge Economy and Life Cycle Costs – presented by Michael Barker, Ph.D., P.E., professor at the University of Wyoming and director of the SSSBA Bridge Education Center

• Prefabricated Steel Bridge Options and Accelerated Bridge Construction Solutions – presented by Guy Nelson, Valmont Structures

• Barron County Press-Brake Formed Tub Girder Bridge – presented by Mark Servi, Barron County; Jacob Friberg, Cooper Engineering; and Tim MacLaughlin-Barck, Larson Construction

The SSSBA is a group of bridge and buried soil steel structure industry leaders who have joined together to provide educational information on the design and construction of short span steel bridges in installations up to 140 feet in length.
